Eight months since the opening of the Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kitale, health service delivery in Trans Nzoia county has notched up.

Projects Implementation Committee chairperson Dr Nobert Musundi said progress has been made in revamping the hospital from its previous state.

“We will soon have a full report of the current status of the facility as we have been doing a joint evaluation with the contractors and sub contractors, but generally, we have done much as a county to make the hospital fully operational,” he said.

The WKTRH currently has over 14 fully functional sections. They include the outpatient unit, chronic disease management clinic, CT Scan, Emergency wing, amenity wards, male and female medical wards, pharmacy, maternity theatre, laboratory and the morgue.

Health Chief Officer Judith Simiyu said the new administration took over the facility from the contractor who had taken long to complete construction and fast tracked the process of making it operational.

“This facility has been operational since August last year when His Excellency the governor officially launched it and it was renamed Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral,” Dr Simiyu said.

The multi-billion facility, whose building commenced about seven years ago, was launched by Governor George Natembeya on August 4, 2023.

After assuming office, Natembeya constituted the Implementation Committee to oversee management, which helped see its completion.

The 350-bed capacity hospital in the outskirts of Kitale town was initially named Trans Nzoia Teaching and Referral Hospital.
