Former Devolution PS Peter Mangiti on Wednesday led a team of friends and members of Transformers Mathare to donate foodstuffs and clothing to residents affected by floods.

Mangiti who is a member of Transformers Mathare rallied other well-wishers to also donate to the affected victims.

The support team include the Daryn Hart Foundation in Mathare and Savanah Foundation, Sukuma Twende Trust, Rotary Club of Nairobi - Peponi, Spirit in Action, Keep a Girl in School and Young Jains Nairobi.

Mangiti urged all Kenyans to help one another in the tough times as rains continued to pound in the country.

"I call upon all Kenyans to extend a helping hand to affected families by giving the little they have," he said.

He was speaking during the event where residents gathered to share their experiences of being displaced by the floods.

Matekwa Mudi, a resident of Mathare said he was devastated having lost everything as his house was swept by water.

"Everything was swept by the water and as of now I am residing at a school with other victims.. it is not easy to start afresh with no job," he told the Star.

He was, however, happy that there were good Samaritans who were helping them to get food for the kids.

He urged the government to help settle the affected to a better place.

The government on Wednesday said that the death toll from flood-related incidences has risen to 257, marking the loss of 19 more people over the past 24 hours.

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said 14 adults and five children were reported dead over the last 24 hours.He said the number of people affected by rains now stands at 293,661 while 54,837 households have been displaced.

Mwaura said another 188 people have been injured.

"We are equally saddened by the rising death toll and we send our sincere condolences to the affected families," Mwaura said.

He said infrastructure has been hit hard with significant damage to railway lines and numerous roads are now impassable.

Mwaura revealed that the government is meanwhile mobilising nearly Sh4 billion to support recovery and relief efforts and emphasised the government's commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of all affected Kenyans.
