THE Kisumu Public Health department has said no meat in the county contains formalin.

The department conducted investigations after the Health Committee in February reported that some butcheries in Kondele and Migosi might be using the chemical to preserve meat.

Formalin is mainly used to preserve bodies in morgues.

In March, Migosi MCA Paul Achayo requested a statement from the Health Committee over the claims.

In a letter, Public Health officer Arthur Shikanda told the assembly the department did not find any meat laced with the chemical or cases of poisoning from the preservative.

The report was read by deputy majority leader James Omollo in the county assembly last Thursday.

However, the department found that many butcheries did not meet hygiene and food handling standards, and few had cooler boxes.

It also revealed some people take dead animals for slaughter.

The report said there will be continuous inspection of foods and the department asked the public to report traders mishandling food.
