Floods leave Turkana county Sh1.2bn poorer

Floods have left the Turkana county Sh1,199,750,000 poorer, Governor Josphat Nanok has said.

Five people died in the October 18 flash floods. The county lost 6,413 goats,63 camel and 67 heads of cattle to the floods.

The flooding affected eight wards in the riparian areas of River Turkwel. The wards are Lodwar Township, Kerio, Kanamkemer, Lobei/Kotaruk, Kang’atotha, Letea and Song’ot.

“Over 980 traders lost businesses and nearly 3,700 acres of irrigated land were destroyed. A total of 1,426 households were affected and areas like Lokangkae and Nasinyono in Turkana West were inaccessible,” Nanok said.

The county and national governments and development partners raised Sh420,847,250 and Sh16,760,000 as emergency assistance. 

Nanok said 3,940 bags of maize, 605 bags of beans, 532 jerricans of cooking oil were received as relief assistance to the affected households.
