Internally displaced persons in Nakuru county have appealed to the President to help them get their share of the money allocated to them.

Speaking to the press in a Nakuru hotel, the IDPs from different parts of the county castigated government officials tasked with distributing the cash saying they used underhand dealings.

Led by Nakuru county IDPs coordinator Lucy Njeri, the group accused the Interior ministry of failure to implement the President's directive even after the money was released by the Treasury.

They also accused the ministry of disbanding the National Consultative and Coordination Committee that had been tasked with the compensation of the IDPs.

“We had the NCCC office led by Aden Wachu. It did a good job of compensating the IDPs and went around the country preaching cohesion. It’s unfortunate that even before they finished the job it was disbanded,” Njeri said.

“The law on IDPs was a parliamentary act, how did it become null and void? We want to ask Parliament if they are aware that the law they passed on IDPs is not working," she added.

The IDPs have also decried not being involved in the peace and cohesion missions yet they are the people who know better how lack of peace can affect a nation.

“We want to be at the forefront telling people the danger of lack of peace in the country and the advantage of having it. We want to help the President because we are the ones who suffered most,” Njeri said.

According to one of the victims, Joseph Mutai, among the IDPs that were to be compensated, only about 20 per cent got their share.

Mutai said those who were tasked with the job to compensate the IDPs have misadvised the President that they were all compensated while that is not the case.

“We urge the President before he retires, he needs to know that the money that the government allocated to the IDPs, only a handful of people got the money, we want to know who took the money that was meant for IDPs,” he said.

“We request the President to visit Molo and the Rift Valley at large to get a clear picture. Most of the IDPs have never been compensated even after you ordered for their compensation,” he added.
