KAKAMEGA Governor Wycliffe Oparanya will lead a campaign to mobilise residents to register as voters.

Speaking on Sunday during a fundraiser in Lurambi constituency, he said he will work with nine county MPs.

Oparanya said teamwork is necessary amongst elected leaders to achieve the benefits of devolution.

He said billions of shillings lost through corruption could be used to fix roads.

“President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto should decisively tackle rampant corruption in government,” Oparanya said.

MPs present said political differences hurt development.

“Regardless of our political party affiliations, we will traverse the 12 subcounties together,” Ikolomani MP Bernard Shinali said.

“We will urge our people to register as voters, and this has started with Lurambi.”

Shinyalu MP Anami Lisamula said political parties are “just like vehicles”.

They should not be allowed to breed discord among leaders, he said.

“The same divisions that have curtailed development are behind the apathy in the ongoing voter registration,” Lisamula said.

“We need to list 2.7 million voters to improve our bargaining power.”

Other MPs present included Andrew Toboso of Butere, Emmanuel Wangwe of Navakholo, Malulu Injendi of Malava and Raphael Otaalo of Lurambi.
