DISPUTED LEADERS: Ford People faction chairman James Kenani (second left) and other officials on Friday outside Shalom House, Nairobi, after the party NEC meeting.

Ford People's officials are in power illegally and should be replaced by an interim committee until elections are held, a faction has said.

Speaking to the Star on the phone yesterday, faction leader James Kenani said the office bearers' tenure expired in January.

He said former Cabinet minister Henry Obwocha should not be the party chairman because he is public officer.

Obwocha was appointed chairman of the Privatisation Commission last year.

However, the party’s secretary general Albert Nyaundi dismissed Kenani's allegations.

Speaking to the Star on phone yesterday, he said Kenani cannot claim to speak on behalf of the party as he is not a member.

Nyaundi said Kenani quit to join National Labour Party in 2014 after he was denied the party’s ticket to contest the Nyaribari Chache by-election.

However, Kenani said he returned to Ford People in March last year.

He renewed his life membership after paying Sh5,000, having renounced the NLP membership.

Nyaundi denied the claims, saying he has not signed a life membership for Kenani.

“The receipt is not authentic. You cannot be a life member without a certificate,” he said.

Meanwhile, sources told the Star faction secretary general Mwancha Okioma has been expelled from the party’s National Executive Committee.

Okioma unsuccessfully sought the Nyamira governor’s seat in 2013 and wants to contest again in 2017.

He was expelled last week during an NEC meeting in Nairobi.
