Kericho enters home stretch ahead of Monday by-election

Kanu

A former head teacher at Chebwagan Secondary School, Kanu’s Paul Sang began his political career in 1997 by defeating then powerful Cabinet minister Jonathan Ng’eno to win the Bureti parliamentary seat. The staunch Kanu politician studied at Cheptenye Boys’ Secondary School for his O Levels and Shimo la Tewa for his A Levels. He graduated from the University of Nairobi, with a bachelor’s degree in Education and was a teacher for 18 years In 2002, he became Health minister for three months in President Mwai Kibaki’s administration. As Bureti MP, he is credited with championing construction of 30 secondary schools, 24 dispensaries and 18 primary schools. He was among leaders behind the establishment of a medical training centre in Kapkatet in 2007 Sang has promised to unite the leaders in the county and address the issue of multinational tea estates.

Jubilee

Aaron Cheruiyot of Jubilee is a newcomer to politics. Cheruiyot, 30, went to Kericho High School, where he did his O level. He joined Moi University and graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts, Communication and Media Studies degree. He owns African Savanna Tours and Travellers Company. Married with one child, the Kabiaga village native says he will ensure county funds are closely monitored and well utilised for their intended purpose. The Nairobi-based businessman knows what it takes when public funds are not well spent and has vowed to make sure corruption at the county is wiped out once and for all if elected. Cheruiyot’s priority is to address the plight of the youth, the old and women through development projects for their economic well-being.

Maendeleo Democratic Party

A lawyer by profession, he is vying for the Kericho Senate seat on the Maendeleo Democratic Party ticket. Ngeno graduated from Makerere University in Uganda with a law degree. The father of three lost the Kipkelion West parliamentary race in the March 4, 2013, general election to incumbent Jackson Rop. He is currently a practising lawyer at the Kericho law courts and a real estate businessman. E n t r e p r e n e u r s h i p development is his main goal. He sees this as the solution to youth unemployment. The Kipkelion West resident says the county has many untapped resources that could transform its economic wellbeing if well utilised. If elected, Ngeno’s priority will be to address youth unemployment as well as the economic well-being of women and the aged.

United Democratic Movement

Paul Sigey, 60, hails from Buret subcounty. The Nairobi real estate businessman is banking on his political experience to change the county’s economic well-being. Sigey says he will push for the national government to distribute at least 45 per cent of the national resources to all 47 counties.

New Democratic party

David Mutai, despite having been cleared by the IEBC, does not have campaign posters or a campaign team. He has not been seen since he presented his papers to the IEBC. He is said to be a teacher at Kabarok High School in Nakuru county and hails from Londiani town, Kipkelion East.

National Vision Party

Bishop Daniel Tanui has degree in theology. The veteran politician from Kipkelion West represented the larger Kipkelion constituency during the Kanu regime for two terms. He was also Trade assistant minister. Tanui is running on the National Vision Party ticket. He is banking on past political experience to win. Tanui is among the founders of Peace and Mercy Church of East Africa with headquarters at Sondu in Sigowet-Soin constituency, Kericho county. The father-of-four’s priority if he wins will be to ensure he instils good Christian values to drug addicts. Tanui believes he can do a lot for the county through the devolved funds.
