A Senate team is this morning expected to hold fresh elections to elect a new chairman after Cord de-whipped Nyamira Senator

Kennedy Mong’are.

Today’s Senate Public Accounts Committee election comes at a time when Cord has dropped two other senators from the

watchdog committee.

Kisumu Senator Anyang Nyong’o and his Vihiga counterpart George Khaniri will now join Mong’are in the cold.

Nyong’o and Khaniri are said to have resigned from the committee last week.

Senators who will participate in the elections include John Lonyangapuo (West Pokot), Martha Wangari (nominated) and Kimani Wamatangi (Kiambu).

Others are Amos Wako (Busia), Stephen Ntutu (Narok), Muriuki Karue (Nyandarua), Hassan Omar (Mombasa) and Bonny Khalwale (Kakamega).

Two weeks ago, Mong’are beat Khalwale in a secret ballot, but Senate minority whip Johnstone Muthamawrote to Speaker Ekwee Ethuro to dewhip him.

There were claims Khalwale offered himself for the election at the last minute.

This is despite an existing gentleman’s agreement to serve one term and step down for Nyong’o.

Mong’are was replaced by ODM’s Agnes Zani (nominated), but the move was opposed, forcing Cord to rescind the decision.

At the time of going to press, Ethuro was expected to make a ruling on whether Mong’are will remain the chairman.
