Rainfall is expected to continue pounding various parts of the country until next week, the Meteorological Department has said.

The department, in a detailed forecast, said rains started intensifying in most parts of the country from Wednesday this week.

The forecast was released on Tuesday and runs until next Tuesday.

"The rainfall is likely to intensify from Wednesday over parts of Northeast, highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Southeast Lowlands and the Coast," Met Director Stella Aura said.

Aura said that Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Laikipia, Nakuru and Narok counties will experience occasional morning rains throughout the forecast period.

Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Busia will also have morning rains.

In the afternoon, showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur over several places throughout the forecast period.

"The intensities are likely to increase on Thursday (yesterday) and Sunday".

Aura said throughout the forecast period, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi will also wake up to rain.

The morning rains may spread to several places today.

Aura said heavy rainfall was likely to occur yesterday and on Sunday.

"Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo are likely to experience morning rains throughout the forecast period," she said.

However, Aura said, the intensities are likely to increase and the rains may spread to several places on Thursday and Sunday.

The MD said Kajiado, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos and Taita Taveta counties are likely to experience morning rains over few places throughout the forecast period.

Heavy rainfall was expected on Thursday and is set to go until Sunday.

Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale counties are also likely to experience morning and early afternoon showers over several places for much of the forecast period.

The department said the intensity was expected to increase between Wednesday and Saturday.

The forecast shows that the intensity of rainfall in many places will range between 50mm and 100mm.

In the past few days, heavy rains have hit most parts of the country.

In Mombasa, heavy rains have been experienced in Nyali, Kisauni, Kongowea, Kaa Chonjo and parts of Mombasa CBD.

The department has said that the ongoing heavy rains could end in December.

In Kitui, four people drowned after their vehicle was swept away by floods.

They were in a double cabin pick-up truck on Wednesday night when Mutindi seasonal river burst its banks and swept them with its waters.

The car belonging to Prime Telcoms Limited had six occupants when the incident occurred at around 11pm.

In the Northeastern, heavy rains have pounded Wajir and Mandera.

The rains have killed more than 5,000 livestock in Mandera.
