The selection process of students set to benefit from Elimu scholarships and Equity Wings to Fly has been completed.

Some 9,000 students will benefit from the Elimu Scholarship, 5,000 of them selected from the slums.

However, more students in the slums who applied for the scholarships decried missing out.

Gloria Atieno and Violet Awuor have not yet come to terms with missing out on their Form 1 slots.

The two learners from Dandora slums said they applied for the scholarships but did not qualify.

Atieno scored 318 marks and was selected to join Shiners Girls in Nakuru.

On reporting to school, she is supposed to part with almost Sh25, 000 for the first term.

Awuor scored 379 marks and was selected to join Lwak Girls in Siaya County.

Her mother is supposed to pay almost Sh60, 000 which includes school fees, uniforms, and essential items.

Equity Group Chair James Mwangi said ESP demonstrated a direct impact on the beneficiaries through sustained high performance.

Mwangi added that transition rates and exemplary leadership skills are attributed to the opportunities granted to needy learners.

"High school completion rates among our scholars stand at 98% with at least 83 per cent of them attaining university entry grades,” Mwangi said.

He was speaking while announcing the completion of the selection exercise.

The Elimu scholarship program is implemented in partnership with the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Education.

This brings the total number of secondary school scholarships issued through Equity Group Foundation to 47,009 comprising both Wings to Fly and Elimu scholars.

The scholarships target academically talented students who excel in their KCPE exams and who are faced with financial constraints that would hamper their progress to secondary school.

This year's Elimu scholars will form the 3rd cohort while the Wings to Fly scholars of 2022 form the 13th cohort.

The scholarship caters for full tuition fees for four years including a comprehensive mentorship program.

It also caters for a back-to-school hamper, psychosocial support, and medical care while in school.

The selection process was made possible by members of the community who serve on the Community Scholarship Selection Boards (CSSBs) and the Community Scholarship Advisory Committees (CSACs) across the country.
