Two people were killed on Sunday evening in a road accident involving a lorry and a truck in the Makindu area along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway, police say.

The lorry was from Mombasa direction heading to Nairobi while the truck was heading in the opposite direction when they collided head-on.

The lorry was ferrying traders to Makindu town.

Twenty-two others were injured in the crash and taken to Makindu Sub County Hospital.

Patrick Mutinda, the medical superintendent for Makindu Hospital, said that the facility received two dead bodies and 22 patients who were seriously injured.

13 were treated as outpatient and released while 9 who were critically injured were admitted.

"Three out of the nine were taken to theatre," noted Mutinda

The bodies of the deceased were taken to the same hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.
