THE Municipal Council of Siaya has given kiosk owners in the town one week pay Sh1.2 million in land rates arrears or have their structures demolished.  The town clerk Domnic Akugo said 106 kiosks owners have failed to pay the rates for five years

"Out of a total of 134 kiosk owners at Migingo market, only 28 have complied by promptly remitting the land dues to the council," said Akugo yesterday. He was accompanied by treasurer Otieno Agik '' Failure by owners of the kiosks to formalise ownership is the reason behind the accumulated arrears,'' said Akugo.
He said the council requires the funds to among other things improve the dilapidated sewerage system and installation of the street lights in the town. ''The resolution to demolish the kiosks was reached at a planning committee meeting where those who failed to adhere to the notice, their premises would be demolished and the pieces of plots be repossessed before issuing to potential developers.
The officers who were addressing the media yesterday in Siaya town, noted that Siaya being the county headquarters there was need to establish modern structure and in a bid to attract potential investors in the town. The duo warned that those whose structures will be demolished before being repossessed, would not be issued with any other plots.
