Sapera thrills in Mombasa
The Indian State of Rajasthan is well known for its rich cultural in folk music and dance. On Saturday July 28 at the Shree Navnat Vanik Mahajan Hall, Mombasa the renowned folk artist Radha Sapera and party showcased their rich talent to a houseful of music enthusiasts. The guests were there on an invitation from the Assistant High Commissioner of India, Mombasa A.R. Radhakrishan in association with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), New Delhi. This
is part of a cultural exchange programme by the ICCR to propagate the
Indian cultural in other countries and let the other countries show
off their cultural talents and educate each other.
The Ramgarhia Youth Association Pool and Darts Tournament
The city of London welcomed the 30th
Olympiad over the weekend but right here at home, the city of
Nairobi’s Sikh Youth conducted their own sports event. It was the Ramgarhia Youth Association Pool and Darts Tournament at the Simba Union Club Nairobi. To
capture the younger audience participation they introduced a
Playstation competition, which nearly fooled me as it looked like a
live football match going on, on the television but was actually a
playstation game. Morale was high and symbolised brotherhood amongst
the young men of the Ramgarhia Youth Association which is aiming to
bring the Sikh youth together not only through social, religious but
also sporting events such as this. This tournament was sponsored by Trailink Fabricators, Uneek Electric, Raicon Construction, R.T. (East Africa) Ltd and Banbros Limited. Muna Seehra was the highest scorer in the darts competition while an interesting husband-wife pair of Mr and Mrs Manpreet Kalsi won the overall darts competition. Preet Kamal was the overall Pool singles winner.
Bollywood Night Comes To Town
It was Bollywood night at the Chowpaty Highpark on Saturday evening with the Shaan Orchestra. They have been entertaining the Asian community for 28 years and is made up of talented Ghazal singer Mohammed Sumra, lead Singer Mohammed Rafique and female Lead Singer Arti Vichlani.
Most recent Bollywood songs have become racy and pacy with their beats
and lyrics and so sometimes it is good to reminisce the soulful music
by musical legends such as Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Hemant Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle.
There was a session of requests and it was a pleasure to listen to the
black and white movie songs and enjoy the meal with family and
friends, a wonderful distraction from the heavy ongoing wedding season.
Incidentally Rafique’s wife Rashida is busy with the
wedding season as she is the most wanted fruit and chocolate maker and
designer for the music parties and receptions. Her recommendation also
for those fasting for the month of Ramadhan include her own recipes of
Kaymati and Pinepple Crush which are simple, tasting and refreshing.
