Chief Justice Martha Koome has organised a luncheon for top women leaders in the country as a way of celebrating and honouring them.

Koome said the event dubbed ‘Chief Justice’s Distinguished Women Movement Leaders' will be held on August 2, this year.

“Kenya boasts a generation of women leaders who held the sails as we navigated the difficult post-independence years towards the constitutional promise of equality in life, legacy and leadership,” she said.

Taking to her X account, Koome also joined millions of women around the world in celebrating their achievements and successes.

“On this Women's Day, I join millions of women and champions of gender justice and equality worldwide in reaffirming my commitment to a justice system that prioritises the rights, safety and dignity of every woman,” the CJ said.

Koome also used the opportunity to congratulate elected women governors for the initiative to launch the G7 Strategy.

Throwing her weight behind it, Koome said the strategy will pave way for aspiring national leaders.

“The strategy will entrench an authentic system of inter-generational dialogue and inter-generational co-leadership across all sectors in our country,” she noted.

President William Ruto on Thursday presided over the launch of the G7 Strategy.

G7 is a caucus bringing together the seven elected women governors in the country.

They are Council of Governors chairperson Anne Waiguru, Susan Kihika (Nakuru), Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos), Fatuma Achani (Kwale), Kawira Mwangaza (Meru) and Embu's Cecily Mbarire.

It seeks to empower and support women leaders in demonstrating efficient, transformational and strategic governance within the devolved structures.

Koome urged the women not to be afraid to challenge structures that make their journey seemingly unattainable.

“As we swim against patriarchal tides towards the deeper waters of full gender equity and equality, we must not be afraid to challenge structures that make this journey seemingly unattainable,” Koome said.

“One must not be afraid of swimming in deep waters, it is there that the buoyant force of the water, lifts you best.”

International Women’s Day is a global day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and girls.

Society utilises the day by making a call to action for strengthening gender equality and accelerating women’s empowerment.

This year's theme for observance of International Women’s Day is 'Invest in women: Accelerate progress'.

It is based on the United Nations 68th Commission on the Status of Women priority themed ‘Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective’.
