Former Starehe MP, aspirant Steve Mbogo now claims the impeachment of Kisii Deputy Governor Robert Monda was political.

Speaking on K24 TV on Friday, Mbogo said a political fallout between Monda and Kisii Governor Simba Arati was to blame for the ouster.

"It's all politics. I think there was friction between the governor and deputy governor," Mbogo said.

He went on to say that Members of County Assembly (MCAs) are usually embroiled in such in such rifts.

"MCAs are the easiest guns for hire as they manage and oversight people who control billions of shillings," Mbogo said.

"The MCAs have become quite politicised, and that's why a large number of counties are having conflicts between Ward Reps and governors such as is the case in Meru," Mbogo said.

Mbogo cited previous cases that bear similarity to Monda's impeachment.

"We can refer to Siaya county where there was a case between James Orengo and his deputy William Oduol," Mbogo said

Oduol and Governor Orengo have differed on various reasons, including allegations of corruption and favouritism.

In Meru, Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been impeached by the MCAs twice in 10 months.

Mwangaza was first impeached by the County Assembly in December last year, barely three months into office, but the resolution was overturned by the Senate on December 30, 2022.

In October 2023, Meru MCAs voted to impeach Mwangaza for the second time, accusing her of violating national and county laws.

However,  the Senate overturned the impeachment of Mwangaza.

Monda lost his seat after the majority of Senators voted to uphold the four charges against him by the members of the Kisii County Assembly.

He becomes the first deputy governor to be impeached, since the start of devolution in Kenya, in 2013.

Monda was accused of gross violation of the Constitution and law, abuse of office, gross misconduct, and crimes under national law.

"The result of the division indicates that the senators have upheld the following impeachment charges; gross violation of the constitution and any other law, abuse of office, gross misconduct and crimes under national law," Senate Speaker Amason Kingi said.

This was concluded by 32 senators who voted for his removal, with 10 against and one abstained.
