Floods: Ruto directs multi-agency team to step up response efforts

The President says multi-agency team should immediately respond to situations caused by floods.

President William Ruto has directed multi-agency team to step up flood response.

The President's directive comes in the wake of heavy floods causing loss of lives and damage to properties.

The President said that the multi-agency should immediately respond to situations caused by floods.

"This morning I engaged leaders in counties and regions affected by the ongoing heavy rains. Consequently, I directed the ministries of Interior and EAC, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands and Regional Development, and the National Youth Service to immediately respond to the situation caused by the floods," the President said in a statement on X, Wednesday.

"They will immediately step up multi-agency response efforts."

Heavy rains across the country since the start of the week have caused great damage to residents in all affected areas.

The heavy rains affected the movement of vehicles and human traffic.

Businesses in some areas had to stop because of the water covering the spaces within which they operate.

The Kenya Red Cross in a statement on Wednesday said the heavy rainfall received on Tuesday night has led to flash floods in various estates across the city.

The worst hit include Mukuru, Mathare, Huruma, Ruaraka, Baba Dogo, Bosnia, Umoja 3, Choka, Njiru, Ruai, Utawala, Githurai, Kahawa, Eastern Bypass, Kinoo, Kijabe, Limuru, Ruiru, Graceland, Joska, Kaswito, Kicheko, Mangili, Kenyatta Road, Juja, Kitengela, and Magadi.

Kenyans have been advised to prepare for heavy rainfall that will run until Thursday.

Kenya Meteorological Department said the heavy rains which will begin on Saturday and end on April 18, 2024, at 6 pm.

The weatherman said heavy rainfall is expected to continue from Saturday over several parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley including the Nairobi area, Southeastern Lowlands, Coast and the northern sector.

The forecast said heavy rainfall of more than 40mm in 24 hours will be experienced over Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley including the Nairobi area, Southeastern Lowlands and South coast on April 14, 2024. 

It added that the rainfall is likely to intensify from April 15 to 18, 2024 to more than 50mm in 24hrs along the Coast.

"The heavy rainfall is likely to be accompanied by gusty winds, large ocean waves and strong southerly winds in the Southeastern region," Director, of Meteorological Services David Gikungu said.

He pointed out counties that should be on the lookout for potential floods, flash floods and reduced visibility.
