A participant from Kenya is among the 5 winners that secured victory in Xiaomi Africa's online photography competition.

Yonis Mohammed emerged as a champion, alongside Patrick Philemon Kulinganila from Tanzania, and three Nigerians: John Oluwamokamiyo, Samson Osas, Victor Onokaye, and Emmanuel Kenechukwu.

Selected from a pool of 1,000 applicants, the winners were rewarded with a three-day expedition to Maasai Mara, accompanied by accomplished photographers Alamin Mutunga, Nimrod Zollo, and Kenneth Obina.

Last month, Xiaomi Africa initiated an online photography campaign aimed at encouraging enthusiasts to display their photography prowess using Xiaomi smartphones.

The campaign was created to offer Xiaomi fans an opportunity to deepen their experience with Xiaomi phones and learn more photography skills.

“A great example is the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ 5G which the photographers took to the Mara. At 200MP and 4K video capabilities, this camera signifies a new era in mobile photography in mid-level phones,” says a statement from the participants

Smartphone photography has revolutionized the photography market, changing how art is viewed today.

Companies like Kodak didn’t survive the change, while some like Nikon, Canon, and Sony pulled through the evolution.

Others like Sony went the extra mile by introducing phones in line with their quality digital DSLR cameras.

Although phones diminish the need for traditional photography gear, they additionally opened up new potential markets for smartphone-specific photography devices and services.

The industry is shifting in a collaborative form between technologies where expert photographers use both to adapt to the different changes.
