Operations at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport will not be paralised as from tomorrow September 1, after Kenya Aviation Workers Union extended the strike notice period with at least one more week.

Kenya aviation workers had threatened to go on strike from September 1, 2024 after talks with the government over the planned leasing of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) hit a deadlock.

However, the government bowed to the pressure after talks on Thursday 29,  and granted some of the contract documents for the JKIA lease by Indian Firm Adani Holdings.

KAWU has continuously voiced its opposition to the proposal by the Adani Airport Holdings to take over management of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

The union said the move to put the strike on hold was to allow for scrutiny of documents that have so far been granted to them.

KAWU secretary general Moss Ndiema however, maintained that the Union is determined to stop the project calling for a stop on all the ongoing stakeholder engagement.

“We were given the Adani concession agreement, KAA feasibility study and some other document. We have deliberate about the issue and it is our resolution that we will make a further delay on our strike action,” said Ndiema

This is the third time the union has postponed the planned strike. KAWU issued a formal seven days' strike notice on August 12, to both KAA and KQ on their intention to paralise operations over the planned JKIA deal.

The intended strike was on account of, and in protest against, the alleged planned sale of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Adani Airport Holdings Limited of India.

KAWU said the alleged that the deal was being carried out in a secretive and unlawful manner and would also ultimately result in massive job losses for employees.

The workers also protested against alleged acts of impropriety and gross misconduct regarding provision of security services at the airport.
