There was a fire incident this evening at one of the dormitories in the prestigious Moi High School Kabarak in Rongai Sub-County of Nakuru County.

This is the first time such an incident is being reported since the school, which is owned by Former President Daniel Moi’s family, was established.

Through his Facebook page, the family Press Officer, Alex Kiprotich said there were no casualties because students were in for evening remedial classes.

“At the time of the incident, students were in class for evening remedial lessons,” read the post

Kiprotich said the fire was contained by firefighters from Nakuru County before it could spread and cause extensive damage.

He added that the extent of the damage on the dormitory is minimal.

“The cause of fire is not clear but the school fraternity is happy because the situation is under control with no injuries to the students or staff,” he said.

He said School Principal, Elishebah Cheruiyot, staff and some of the board members were present and were coordinating efforts of putting off the fire.

“The school management is getting in touch with parents to assure them that all their children are safe and continuing with learning,” Kiprotich said.

Deputy County Police Commander in charge of Ronga Sub-County, Richard Rotich, said the fire was noticed at about 5:30 pm.

He said mattresses and students personal effects were among the items that were destroyed in the inferno.

"Destruction to the building was minimal, only a section of the roofing was damaged otherwise the floor and walls are intact," Rotich added.
