Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has urged city residents to sign up for the newly introduced Social Health Insurance Fund.
The county boss Thursday said the new medical scheme offers the most effective way to access free medical care.
Speaking at Charter Hall, where he handed out 1,000 title deeds, Sakaja emphasized that all county hospitals are equipped to assist residents in transitioning from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to SHIF.
"Simply dial *147# to register with the Social Health Authority," Sakaja advised.
He encouraged residents to take advantage of the new insurance scheme.
He assured those unable to register via the USSD code that all county hospitals are ready to assist with the process.
"I’ve directed medical staff at all hospitals to help residents register," Sakaja confirmed.
The governor outlined the benefits of SHIF, emphasizing that it would greatly ease the burden of medical expenses.
"By enrolling, you’ll be able to access quality medical services for free, with just a monthly payment that will now cover your healthcare costs," he explained.
Sakaja also noted that this initiative, part of a broader national government plan, would reduce the need for medical bill fundraisers, known as harambees.
"For less than Sh500 a month, you can access healthcare. Employed individuals might pay a bit more, but the advantages are clear," he added.
The Social Health Authority (SHA) is a government initiative aimed at providing universal health coverage for all Kenyans.
It is set to replace the NHIF, offering more comprehensive, affordable, and accessible coverage, especially for low-income households.
SHIF seeks to allow access to medical services at both public and private hospitals, reducing the financial burden of healthcare.
