The Democratic Party will reduce by 50 per cent nomination fees for women and youth aspiring to run for various seats.

The party's presidential flag bearer and National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi said DP will also waive the charges for women aspirants who will be unable to raise the money but have leadership abilities.

Muturi was addressing women leaders from Kiambu county under the umbrella of Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organization in Ruiru on Tuesday.

The presidential hopeful said the party's move was meant to make it easier for women to go for elective seats.

“We have consulted widely and resolved that DP shall reduce by 50 per cent nomination fee for our women seeking elective positions as well as our youth and people with disabilities,” Muturi said.

He urged women and youth to empower and support each other ahead of the August 9 polls so many of them can rise to leadership positions

“Fight for your space by taking on the political establishment and relentlessly push for increased representation. We will support those who show interest and leadership abilities to achieve their goals,” he said.

Muturi termed it "shameful" for leaders from Mt Kenya region to continue begging to be given the deputy president’s position. He urged leaders from across the region to forge a united front and bargain with other coalitions as equals instead of begging for the running mate slot.

He hit out at a section of Central politicians who have been complaining that the political pact between Deputy President William Ruto and ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi could deny the region a running mate slot.

“It’s disheartening to see some of our leaders in Mt Kenya region running up and down, saying we must be given the running mate position. It’s as if I’m not here running for the presidency. Mt Kenya region has more than eight million votes enough to propel anyone from the region to State House,” Muturi said.
