A Kirinyaga lawmaker is urging education stakeholders to support day secondary schools to effectively implement the Competency Base Curriculum.

Kirinyaga Central MP Gachoki Gitari says that  if well implemented, CBC will enable students studying in day schools to achieve their potential and thus boosting the performance of the institutions.

He added that through day schools, more stakeholders like parents and the neighbouring communities are able to monitor the performance and mannerism of the students unlike boarding schools where students are confined with limited monitors.

“I think those who designed CBC mainly had Day schools in mind because much of the content is set to complement and boost such institutions. Therefore, if seriously implemented, those studying there will greatly benefit with skills,” he said.

The lawmaker further lauded the improving academic performance of day schools under the 8-4-4 system thus exuding confidence that under the new curriculum, the schools will register an even better and exemplary academic record.

Gitari spoke on Wednesday at Kiamutuira Secondary School in his constituency where he commissioned the construction of Sh4.2 administration block.

“In day schools, parents are only required to cater for the school feeding programmes and I believe that together with the county government we can work together and assist parents through the bursary programme,” he said.

He pledged full support for the project as he assured that it will be completed within the shortest time possible.

The MP said under his leadership he will continue safeguarding the future of children by ensuring peddlers of hard drugs and illicit brews are kept at bay.

Mutira MCA David Kinyua pledged to continue partnering with the lawmaker in bettering education in the constituency.

“The construction of the administration block is just but the beginning of greater projects that we have in store for our people. We promised during the campaign and now we have started to deliver. By the end of the term, we pledge that our students will be having better infrastructures like good classes, well-built labs and dorms because education is one of the priorities in our manifesto,” he said.

Kiamutuira school principal Nicholas Kimotho lauded the leadership of Gitari, saying the school has benefited with a lot of infrastructural projects since it was started in 2014.

He added that the school has registered exponential growth of students up from 20 students when it started to 320 currently.

“We are grateful that his leadership has been very resourceful as far as the growth of the school is concerned. We pleaded for help in the hour of need and his office positively responded by constructing many of the classes. Our parents managed to do only one block,” he said.

Kimotho further lauded improved academic performance of the school over the years as he exuded confidence that the institution will continue doing well.

He said 60 students who have schooled in the school have so far earned themselves university slots after attaining the required university grades.
