Kiambu government has commissioned the Makongeni bus terminus in Thika subcounty, ending years of struggle for motorists and commuters.

The new bus terminus is fully tarmacked, has cabro blocks and a modern drainage system.

It also has a solar powered lighting system set to operate for 24 hours.

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, who commissioned the bus terminus, said his administration will build modern stalls for traders.

“We want to support traders by improving their work environment. The construction will be done at zero costs,” he said.

Wamatangi said Thika town bus terminus will undergo a similar facelift to improve operations.

“We are doing all this because I made a promise to Thika residents that I will transform Thika into a smart city,” he said.

Traders and matatu operators at the Makonigeni bus terminus said the terminus will not only improve their operations but will also attract more investors.

They said the dilapidated bus park posed numerous challenges.

During heavy rains, the terminus would be overly muddy while customers would leave the bus park during the sunny season due to clouds of dust.

The construction of the park had caused a heavy traffic snarl-up along the Thika-Garissa Road.

Mataara Sacco chairperson Michael Kahoro said the new terminus will bring order and solve the problem.

“Congestion made operations tough an would cause traffic to overlap to Thika-Garissa Road,” Gichanga said.

The Makongeni bus park was commissioned when plans are being made to elevate Thika to a city.
