The Huduma Mashinani initiative that saw more than 3,000 people access government services in three days at the Kibarani Miracle Park in Mombasa has been extended for two days.

Huduma Centre Mombasa deputy centre manager, Harrison Yogo said this is after a huge number of people, who missed services during the three days, requested for an extension.

“We had initially planned to only hold it on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. However, by Friday, the number of those who needed the services was bigger than those who who had been served,” Yogo said.

“After consultations with our partner, Mombasa Cement, we decided to extend it for two more days."

He said they expect to serve around 3,000 more on the extended days.

Yogo said on average, the Mombasa Huduma centre serves around 2,400 people per day.

On a normal Huduma Mashinani programme, they serve between 500 and 700 people depending on the area they have visited.

“The uniqueness of this partnership with Mombasa Cement is that people who come for the services do not pay anything. Mombasa Cement has catered for that already. Initially, when we took the services, they would still pay the fees required,” he said.

Yogo said they served 3,120 people between Wednesday and Friday.

"On the first day, we got 522 because we made the announcement on the previous night and so not many people got the message on time," he said.

"The number however doubled on the second day to 1,088 and on the third day we served 1,510 people.”

The Mombasa Cement Miracle Park receives more than 30,000 people everyday because of the morning and lunch feeding programmes.

It is this number that we targeted to give the crucial government services.

The services provided include, application and replacement of national ID cards, birth and death certificates and good conduct certificates.

National Social Security Fund, Higher Education Loans Board funds and Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service services are also offered at the centres.

“Not all the services we have brought here require fees. For example, we have a HELB desk and a health desk where people go for VCT. This does not require any fees,” Yogo said.

He called for more partnerships from the private sector on the initiative.

Mombasa Cement Miracle Park manager Gulam Salim said the programme was extended to serve people from Likoni, Magongo, Kisauni, Utange and Majaoni, who had showed up.

“There were many people who missed out because they got the information late. Some said they got the information on WhatsApp but thought it was a scam so they did not to come,” he said.

"When they saw that people were served on TV, they rushed here on Friday. By the time they closed at around 5.30pm, more than 3,000 people were yet to be served."
