DCI officers in Tseikuru sub-county, Kitui County, are investigating the possibility of a tout, who was found dead a few weeks ago, being murdered.

The decaying body of Joseph Muthuli Mailu, 32, was discovered beside the road and adjacent to a thicket in the second week of December after he went missing.

Until his death, Mailu was working with the County Safaris Services, plying the Usueni-Nairobi route.

The deceased, who hails from the Masyungwa area, was laid to rest last Tuesday.

Area police commander Charles Kibathi told the Star on Thursday that they are not resting easily on the case as detectives are leaving no stone unturned in their bid to serve the family justice.

Kibathi had earlier said Mailu went missing after leaving his house at Usieni market in the company of his three-year-old child only for his decomposing body to be found five kilometres away, two days after.

He also disclosed that the police had interrogated his wife regarding his disappearance and death.

“We are investigating whether there was a foul play or the man died of natural cause. We will establish that after an autopsy is carried out,” Kibathi said soon after the tout's body was discovered.

According to the police boss, the deceased was on sick leave when he went missing.

On Thursday, an autopsy report indicated that the deceased kneck was twisted, raising alarm on the possibility of murder by strangulation.

Kibathi called for patience as detectives work on the case even as he said no one had been arrested yet over the matter.

During the tout's burial,  the deceased mother Beatrice Katui Mailu attributed the son's death to suspected murder.

Mailu appealed to police authorities to swing into action and explore all possibilities that could help in solving the puzzle.

She added that they will only move on as a family if they know what really happened to their son and those behind his suspected murder.
