Thirty-one people have sustained injuries at a road accident in Mwala, Machakos County.

They were all occupants of a mini-bus that got involved in a self-involved accident along Machakos – Kitui road in the Mwala subcounty on Monday.

Mwala subcounty police commander Nancy Jerobon said the accident occurred in the Wamunyu area, a few metres from La Palace Hotel.

She said the vehicle’s driver, Michael Maingi, vanished from the scene after the accident occurred.

The incident was reported to Masii police station as a self-involved slight injuries road traffic accident.

“It was reported to the station that a motor vehicle registration number KCE 372E of Mitsubishi FH make that was carrying fare-paying passengers got involved in a self-involved accident at the said location," Jerobon told the Star on Monday.

"The scene was visited by our traffic officers who established that the vehicle which was moving towards Machakos general direction from Kitui veered off the road and landed in a ditch as it was going up the steep hill."

Jerobon said thirty-one occupants sustained injuries during the incident.

She said the cause of the accident wasn’t immediately established.

“They were rushed to Wamunyu Health Centre, Katangi Health Centre, Masii Level 3 Hospital and Machakos Level 5 Hospital in fair conditions,” Jerobon said.

The police boss said the scene was processed and the wreckage was towed to Masii police station pending inspection.

Jerobon said they have launched a probe into the incident.
