Dagoretti North constituency Member of Parliament Beatrice Elachi has alleged that the managing of schools has been highly politicised, a norm that if not checked could affect their performances.

Speaking in an interview on Citizen TV on Monday, Elachi urged the Ministry of Education to address the matter.

"I think the Ministry must now re-awaken. We've made running schools so political and that's one thing we need to re-look at," Elachi said.

She mentioned that this has resulted in conflicts among staff in the education sector.

"You find so many conflicts between teachers," she said.

"Looking at how people run schools nowadays, even appreciating that one has been on a board for one or two terms and it's their time to leave becomes a conflict," she said.

The MP said that it has become very challenging for new teachers joining schools because those they find there feel entitled.

"When new teachers or headteachers come in they're finding it very rough because the people they find there feel entitled," she said.

Elachi added that the focus needs to shift from infrastructural development to the quality of learning.

"When you have an interest in the school you'll not just look at the construction of buildings but also the academics, the quality of learning and the performance," she said.
