Man shoots, injures boy, 10, during New Year celebrations in Juja

A businessman was disarmed after he allegedly shot and injured a 10-year-old boy in Juja, Kiambu county.

This was after a group group of people took the New Year celebrations outside his restaurant in Mugutha area.

A group of youth were camping outside the premises at about 5am when he opened fire in an effort to disperse them.

According to police, the boy was hit by a stray bullet in his lower left leg.

The boy was on his way home after the New Year's celebrations when he was shot. 

He was rushed to a Ruiru hospital.

Police officers visited the scene and recovered some 9mm ammunition and six spent cartridges.

Upon interrogation, the businessman who is a licensed gun holder confirmed he fired the bullets, police say.

He told police he fired several times to disperse a group of rowdy youths who had blocked the main entrance of his business premises.

Police disarmed him. The gun loaded with 12 bullets, police say.

Officials said the injured boy was in stable condition and an investigations have been launched.

Cases of misuse of legal guns have been on the rise amid calls to address the trend.

Elsewhere, a suspected thief was shot and wounded in Kasarani area, Nairobi, in a botched robbery.

Police said a gang was attacking and robbing residents coming from New Year celebrations on Monday when an alarm was raised.

The gang was targeting those coming from the church service within Githurai 44 Stima Line Road.

One suspect was shot in the lower abdomen and rushed to Kiambu Level 5 Hospital.

Police said one stolen motorcycle was recovered at the scene.
