Residents of Korando in Kisumu West subcounty are excited about the government’s plan to construct a sewerage plant in the area.

Daniel Orenje of Lake Victoria Water Service Board disclosed that Sh3.1 billion has been earmarked for the project.

“We have about Sh3.1 billion funding from the French Development Agency and European Investment Bank together with the government of Kenya. So, the purpose of this meeting is to formally introduce the consultant who will carry out technical studies of the project and that will take about one year and thereafter we will now begin the procurement for construction,” he said.

The deputy county commissioner of Kisumu West Musike Vincent hailed the government and the community for the preparation to start the project.

“I think the community is now accepting it because they have now taken it upon themselves to form a committee, that is the landowners committee, and now we are doing it as a continuous engagement because it’s now not a one-day event. Through the meetings we have been having, the community is now accepting it,” he said.

Beatrice Odhiambo, a resident of Korando representing widows, said they have welcomed the construction of the sewerage plant because it will bring many benefits including job opportunities.

"I have been to Rwanda and witnessed the exemplary sanitary standards in Rwanda due to the establishment of a sewer plant in the area,” Odhaimabo said during a public participation meeting organised by the Lake Victoria Water Service Board.

Joshua Abuso, chairman of the committee of residents, praised the project. "We thank God for smoothening the way for this project to take off and we understand that this project will only be successful when we observe peace," he said

The residents also hailed the public awareness that has been created ahead of the project.
