State to build 2,200 classrooms for Grade 9 in Western region

Some 502 classrooms will be constructed in Kakamega county

The national government has started constructing 2,200 classrooms for Grade 9 students in Western counties.

Western regional director of education Jared Obiero said 502 classrooms will be constructed in Kakamega county. Eighty-two will be done in phase 1 and 420 in phase 2.

He spoke at Kakamega Primary School after launching the construction of 12 Grade 9 classrooms.         

“The construction is undertaken by local contractors,” Obiero said.

The director said schools’ boards of management will handle the construction funds, which are already in bank accounts.

“Our work as the education office is only to supervise and see what is going on,” Obiero said.

He said the government has allocated Sh1 million per classroom. He assured Kenyans they will ensure the classrooms are done perfectly and on time.

Kakamega Primary school head teacher Dickson Wanyangu said the school is expecting at least 600 students for Grade 9 next year.
