Newly admitted first-year students at Maseno University  have been urged to take personal responsibility for their academic journey.

Speaking during the university's orientation ceremony, Vice Chancellor Professor Julius Nyabundi emphasised the importance of discipline and focus during their time at the institution.

Nyabundi welcomed the new students, congratulating them on their performance in the 2023 KCSE exams, which earned them a place at the university.

While addressing the 7,850 students the professor warned that indiscipline could lead to severe consequences, including expulsion.

"Kenyan universities share information about students, meaning that those expelled from one institution for misconduct could find it difficult to gain admission elsewhere," he said.

He underscored the university's commitment to providing a conducive learning environment.

Maseno boasts modern facilities, including the largest university library in Kenya and a new tuition complex with a seating capacity of 6,000.

“You have four years here to build a foundation for the rest of your life. Invest wisely in your education and avoid distractions that could derail your future,” he added.

The Professor asked students to avoid divisive groupings based on ethnicity or religion and embrace diversity, unity and inclusivity.

The institution has a mandate to provide equal opportunity education to all Kenyans and will not tolerate exclusionist ideologies.

"I want to emphasise that all students in Maseno University are equal before us. I urge you to accommodate and embrace one another as brothers."

The VC also urged students to be vigilant and avoid risky behaviours that could compromise their safety.

He warned against involvement in drug abuse, late-night activities and unhealthy relationships, advising students to report any suspicious activities to the university authorities.

Students were urged to take pride in their university and contribute to its maintenance and reputation.
