Police are investigating a fire incident at John Mbadi Oma Mixed Secondary school in Suba South which burned down a dormitory on Wednesday morning.

Suba Deputy County Commissioner Sebastian Okiring said the fire broke out at the dormitory at around 7 am.

He said 65 students had spent their night in the dormitory.

It is suspected that the fire spread faster after catching mattresses and mosquito nets which were inside the dormitory.

According to Okiring' the roof of the entire building was destroyed. He said it will have to be replaced.

“Experts will check on the structural integrity of the walls and give necessary advice. At least 60 boxes that contained student belongings were destroyed,” Okiring said.

Police arrived at the scene after the fire incident occurred. They have started investigating what caused the fire.

Okiring said the building had a solar panel on the roof and batteries which provided light.

“The batteries are put at the entrance of the building and the fire started from the opposite side. We have therefore ruled out battery fault,” he said.

Lessons were going on after the incident.

Okiring' said learning will continue at the school as they called on well-wishers to help the affected students.

“Let all students stay calm as investigations into the incident are ongoing. We are reaching out to well-wishers to help them,” Okiring said.
