Residents of Naivasha have raised concern over the rising cases of suicide among learners in the town since the year began.

This follows another case where a Grade 7 student from DEB Primary School committed suicide by hanging self with a rope in his parents’ house.

The 13-year-old boy had gone home to seek medication for a headache before taking his life in unclear circumstances.

This now brings to four the number of students who have taken their lives in and around the lakeside town in 2023.

According to John Kinuthia from the Naivasha GBV cluster group, the minor had not complained of anything before deciding to commit suicide.

Kinuthia decried the rising cases of suicide among the youths adding that depression, financial crunch and use of drugs had played a part.

“We are concerned by the rising number of suicide among students and we have launched a campaign where we are encouraging them to speak out,” he said.

Naivasha OCPD Benjamin Boen confirmed the incident adding that the minor did not leave any suicide note.

“The body has been collected and taken to the local mortuary and we have opened an inquest file as part of our investigations,” he said.

Meanwhile, a motorcycle operator was hit and killed by a speeding car along the Moi South Lake road as cases of fatal accidents involving the operators continue to rise.

Since the year began, close to twenty operators in the town have been killed in road accidents and scores seriously injured.

The OCPD confirmed the incident adding that the deceased was joining a feeder road when he was knocked down and killed.

“We are concerned by the rising cases of fatal accidents involving motorcycle operators and we shall be engaging them afresh on traffic rules,” he said.
