Elgeyo Marakwet Deputy Governor Grace Cheserek has flagged off 20 tonnes of iron-rich bean seeds to enhance food security.

The 'Nyota' bean seeds will be distributed to vulnerable communities and persons living with disability.

Cheserek said the beans will not only improve food production but also improve nutritional needs.

"We want to make families food secure and also improve their incomes through this initiative," she said.

The distribution is part of a five-year partnership with HarvestPlus and World Vision that seeks to benefit more than 10,000 households.

Livestock executive Edwin Seroney urged beneficiaries to prioritise cultivation of the iron-rich beans.

He said agriculture is one of the many ways of earning sustainable income.
