Leaders in Narok county have commended President William Ruto proritising national unity by agreeing to work with opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Led by ODM activist Moses Cheluget, they said the two leaders showed maturity by setting aside their political differences and courting leaders from opposition to the government.

Speaking to the journalists in Ololulunga town in Narok South subcounty on Tuesday, Cheluget said since the unity deal was experienced between the two leaders, who were both contesting for the top seat, peace has prevailed across the country.

“Our country is now peaceful after a series of protests that were witnessed in the country and we are now happy for that,” he said.

He added the unity deal also led to the unification of various communities after the protests by Gen Zs threatened to divide nation.

He called on Kenyans to support the leaders so that the Kenya Kwanza government can fulfill the agendas they had for this country.

“The political temperature was high due to frequent demonstrations, but since the leaders have agreed to be together, our country is more peaceful, and that is good for economic recovery,” he said.

The ODM official called on the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to also support the two leaders for having agreed to work together.

Similar sentiments were echoed by Maasai youth leader Chris ole Saaya, saying that they are happy as the community with the new found unity and called on the other leaders to emulate that so that unity among all the tribes in the country can also be witnessed.

Cheluget urged leaders to stop engaging in regional politics, but they should ensure that they have a unified country because if left unchecked, it can cause divisions among Kenyans.

“The leaders should stop engaging in early campaigns because the next election is still far away and we should focus now on building the country and making sure every Kenyan lives a productive and decent life,” Cheluget said.

He also lauded President Ruto for supporting and rallying other heads of state leaders to support Raila Odinga’s African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship candidature.

“We need to support Raila’s bid to the AUC top job because he has always articulated a vision for Africa and ensured democracy is respected across the continent. The people of Africa stand to benefit from his leadership because he will bring tangible benefits,” Cheluget said.

The election for chairman and seven other positions will take place during the African Union Summit in February 2025.

During his launch last week in the statehouse, Odinga emphasized his commitment to collaborating with heads of state from across the continent to ensure that the bloc’s actions and policies have a direct impact on the lives of its citizens.

Ruto described the former prime minister as the best candidate for the position of the African Union Commission, saying that he possesses the requisite credentials to lead the AUC to the next level.
