Towns in Western Kenya remained calm on Thursday despite threats by youth to stage anti-government protests dubbed 'nane nane'.
Business went on as usual, though the volume of activities and human traffic were low as residents and other visitors to the towns stayed away from towns.
Police mounted roadblocks on major roads to Kakamega, Bungoma and Busia towns.
Security was also beefed up hot spots in or Maraba and Amalemba areas in Kakamega.
Some shops remained closed.
Public transport vehicles were also few as most of them kept off the roads fearing violent protests could erupt.
In Vihiga county main towns of Mbale, Chavakali and Majengo were peaceful with usual business activities.
“As I speak to you, I am in my shop in Mbale town. I have come through Chavakali and everything is normal apart from police roadblocks,” a trader said.
In Bungoma town, business went on as usual. There was however increased police patrols.
