Kenyan Judge Joyce Aluoch elected first Vice President of the ICC

ICC judges elected Kenya’s Joyce Aluoch as the first Vice President of the court at The Hague on Wednesday

Judge Aluoch is an advocate of the High Court and the chair of the African Union Committee of Experts on the Rights of The Child.

She was appointed judge at the ICC’s Trial Division on March 11, 2009 when she handled cases related to the conflict in Darfur, Sudan.

Aluoch previously served as a Judge of the High Court of Kenya for over 20 years before being appointed to the Court of Appeal in December 2008.

She also chaired the task force that worked toward the implementation of the new Sexual Offences Act, 2006 and was the vice-chair and member of the UN Committee on the Right and Welfare of the Child.

The ICC judges elected Silvia Gumendi from Argentina as President and Japan’s Kuniko Ozaki as second Vice President.
