The Nyeri assembly has passed a motion that will see boys get free initiation services.

On Wednesday, MCAs approved the motion by Kiganjo- Mathari ward representative.

Boys pay a minimum of Sh3,000, especially during the peak season of December, for initiation.

“The Special Programmes ministry should take over from here so that the boys are also given Kikuyu cultural guidance on how to be responsible, respectable and avoid joining bad groups. This way, we shall be able to raise youths who are law abiding and who are not awash with Western cultures,” he added.

The Special Programs Ministry will join hands with Kikuyu Council of Elders and the county hospitals where every year, parents can take their children for initiation rite of passage.

“The boys will also get appropriate counseling on the effects of alcohol, drugs and substance abuse and how to abstain from the vice, how to avoid negative peer pressure and how to observe the community traditions and culture,” he added.

He said he is targeting over 9,000 boys to benefit starting this December.

Mutahi said the boys will also be guided how to coexist with their parents, members of the clans and the entire community and how to behave in a respectable and dignified manner.
