Detectives probe source of weapons seized in Likoni raid

'We intend to scale up the search and identify the source'

In Summary

• The sleuths want to find out if police officers are colluding with suspects and supplying them with the weapons.

• The discovery followed the shooting of three terror suspects on Tuesday

Detectives in Mombasa were yesterday trying to establish how police weapons landed in a house at Dudus in Likoni.

The discovery followed the shooting of three terror suspects on Tuesday and the recovery of two jungle trousers, a Kenya Navy combat pair of trousers, five blue police shirts and nine balaclavas.

The officers also recovered 217 rounds of 62 mm ammunition, 490 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, 444 rounds of 22mm ammunition, 232 rounds of 308 sniper ammunition, 45 rounds of 7.62 special ammunition, and 173 rounds of 12-gauge ammunition.

The other recovered items included a G3 rifle serial number G3 A36933331, 68 air rifle pellets, gun oil, one grenade, pistol magazines and one GPS.

“We are going to find out if there was any intention to use these items elsewhere…we intend to scale up the search and identify the source and the intention for it,”  acting CID regional coordinator John Leting said.

The detectives want to find whether some police officers might be colluding with suspects and supplying them with ammunition.

Intelligence reports had earlier indicated that al Shabaab militants planned to attack parts of Kwale, Kilifi and Mombasa using police and UN branded vehicles stolen in North-Eastern Kenya.

Leting said, “This is a lot of ammunition. There may be some guns out there.”

A multi-agency team of Anti-Terror police officers and RECCE Squad raided a house in Dudus and killed three suspects.
