The government on Thursday distributed relief food to Garissa residents.

According to Government Spokesperson, Cyrus Oguna, the food is in addition for the relief amount of Sh3,000 they have been receiving.

"The emergency relief food distribution exercise in Garissa County has been put in place to complement the emergency cash transfer in areas the cash transfer program has not been able to be extended to," he said.

"So far, 34,000 households in Garissa have each been able to receive Ksh. 3,000 as part of the drought mitigation strategy. The foods being distributed have all been purchased locally to ensure that there is growth and circulation of money in our economy."

Oguna was accompanied by Fafi MP Abdikhaim Osman, among other government officials.

Earlier this year, the Garissa County government was appealing for food aid from the World Food Programme to help families affected by drought.

A prolonged dry spell had ravaged the county, affecting the residents as well as the pastoralists.

The Met department said that the dry period would continue for three months, making the already bad situation worse.

Deputy Governor Abdi Dagane had previously appealed for immediate intervention.

“Fafi and Ijara that received substantial rain are currently facing high livestock population but residents are now searching for water and pasture, the situation is likely to worsen in the next two months,” he said.
