Parents have been called upon to safeguard their children's education during the electioneering period.

Learners are currently on a ten-day short holiday until August 11, 2022 to allow the conduct of the general election.

"Parents pay attention to your children education , especially the girl child, see to it that the girl child education is not cut short as a result of teenage pregnancy," Kwale MP Benjamin Tayari said.

He spoke on Wednesday during the commissioning of 300 schools under the CDF project.

The legislator asked school-going children to heed teachers' and parents'advice during this political period.

He further asked parents to stay close to their children in ensuring their safety during this short holiday.

The MP asked parents in Kwale county to prioritise girl child education saying most parents in the county do not take their daughters' education seriously.

"I am ready to support you in all endeavours to see that future MPs, women Representatives, and president comes from this county," he added

Tayari asked parents who were under privileged to apply for bursary at the county offices to ensure smooth operations in learning.

The Covid-19 pandemic subjected learners to a long holiday spell leading to a rise in teen pregnancies across the country.

Children staying at home close to their parents was thought to be safer but this presented another challenge as homes became unsafe for girls due to the rising cases of teenage pregnancies.

Coastal counties of Kwale and Kilifi are among those with a high prevalence in teen pregnancy.
