Sakaja gazettes first sitting of Nairobi MCAs

The first sitting is important as after taking oath of office, MCAs will elect the speaker.

Nairobi Members of County Assembly will be the last to take oath of office after Governor Johnson Sakaja gazetted the first sitting on Thursday, next week.

The gazettement comes a day after he held a meeting with Azimio La Umoja affiliated MCAs.

"I, Sakaja Arthur Johnson, Governor of the County of Nairobi, appoint that the First Sitting of the 3rd Nairobi City County Assembly shall be held at the Nairobi City County Assembly chambers on Thursday September 29, 2022," reads the notice.

Questions had been raised on why Nairobi was yet to gazette the swearing-in, alongside other counties.

It was claimed that the delay was to influence the voting pattern for the speaker.

The swearing in event will see 124 MCAs, 85 elected and 39 nominated, take oath of office, making up the beginning of the city's third county assembly.

UDA has 35 MCAs, ODM has 35, Jubilee six, Wiper four, CCM one and Independent MCAs are three. Utawala ward is yet to hold elections.

President William Ruto-led UDA party and Raila Odinga's ODM each have 17 nominated MCAs.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee has three nominated MCAs and Wiper has two.

The first sitting is important because after taking their oath, they will elect the speaker and his deputy.
