MPs approve Ruto's Cabinet nominees, overturn Malonza rejection

Also approved was Attorney general and secretary to the Cabinet nominees.

The National Assembly has unanimously approved the list of cabinet nominees forwarded by President William Ruto.

The MPs approved the nominees following a report by the Committee on appointments which approved 21 CSs, rejecting that of Peninah Malonza.

The MPs however, voted against the rejection of Malonza paving way for amendment of the report through a motion to consider her nomination.

The motion was moved by Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu.

“The upshot of that vote is that you have approved of all the nominees after Mercy Kiiru Njeru you have negative the rejection of Malonza that means Malonza is in purgatory,” Wetang’ula said.

“Next move is that I have received a notice of motion from Irene Kasalu, I now give her opportunity to move the motion and once we have a seconder you allow the chair to put the question.”

The powerful Committee chaired by Speaker Moses Wetang’ula knocked out the former Kitui Deputy Governor on account of her grasp of topical, administrative and technical issues around the Tourism docket.

But angry lawmakers vetoed the Committee recommendation citing the flimsy grounds the twenty-one-member Committee based their verdict.

The MPs also overruled the minority which had raised issues on the integrity and academic backgrounds of Public Service nominee Aisha Jumwa and her Agriculture counterpart and ex Meru senator Mithika Linturi.

The House also approved Attorney General nominee Justin Muturi and Secretary to the Cabinet nominee Mercy Wanjau.

The National Assembly Committee on Appointments chaired by Speaker Moses Wetangula had unanimously rejected the nomination of Peninah Malonza as the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage.

In a notice of motion, Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwah said the Committee chaired by Speaker Moses Wetang'ula had approved the nomination of the other 21 Cabinet Secretary nominees.

The committee said she didn't demonstrate knowledge of administrative and technical issues touching on the docket she had been nominated to.
