Thirty per cent of Kenyan adults engage in betting, a new survey released on Monday shows.

The study, commissioned by the Media Council of Kenya and conducted by Infotrak Research and Consulting Ltd, said of the total, 31 per cent highlighted that they bet through Betika, 28 per cent rely on Sportpesa whereas 10 per cent use Odi Bet.

“Almost half (46 per cent) of the surveyed respondents agreed that the betting advertisements they heard/saw triggered them to bet,” the survey said.

The study said a majority (62 per cent) of the surveyed respondents acknowledged that they have ever seen or heard adverts on betting within the last week; mostly through the television (43 per cent), radio (26 per cent), and social media (13 per cent).

It said a majority (56 per cent) of the surveyed respondents either bet once a week (31 per cent) or once a day (25 per cent).

On whether the media should be involved in betting, a majority of (59 per cent) of the surveyed respondents affirmed that the media should be involved in betting.

It said Rift Valley was leading at (67 per cent), Eastern (63 per cent), Western (62 per cent), Central (59 per cent), and Nairobi (58 per cent) recorded the highest percentages of those who think the media should be involved in betting.

The survey, “State of Kenya’s Media in 2022” was commissioned by the Media Council of Kenya and conducted by Infotrak Research and Consulting Ltd.

Interviews were conducted using a hybrid approach utilising both Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews and Computer Assisted Personal Interviews.

The survey covered all 47 counties in the 8 regions. The survey findings were representative of Kenyans, 15 years and above.

Rift Valley region took the highest sample with the Northeastern region taking the least sample.

The survey had a target survey sample size of 3,331 respondents.
