At least 30,000 rolls of bhang have been nabbed since the government began a nationwide crackdown on drugs and substances in the country in January.

Interior PS Raymond Omollo on Friday said the operation has seen more than 3,000 people arrested, more than two million litres of illicit alcohol confiscated and 5,000 non-compliant premises shut.

The PS spoke on Friday during the launch of the national survey on the status of drugs and substance use in Kenya 2022 report by Nacada.

He said the government recognises the urgency of this issue of drug and substance use in Kenya and is committed to taking bold actions to protect citizens from the menace.

This, he said, will include progressively stepping up the enforcement of the government's zero-tolerance policy on drugs and alcohol.

"A walk around our urban areas, villages and informal settlements will give you a sense of the drug-infested communities we now have where entire populations, both male and female, are drunk and high," Omollo said.

"The burden is also shifting from Nairobi, Coast, Western and some parts in Nyanza region to North Eastern, Central and Rift Valley."

He termed the statistics on drug and substance abuse as alarming and deeply concerning noting that the fact that more than four million people used drugs in the country in 2022 was staggering.

The PS said the burden is becoming worse among young people yet the most productive years lie within the youth age group.

This, he said, is fast being eroded by alcohol, which is the most actively used, and cannabis whose use has increased by 90 per cent in the last five years.

"Our potential and workforce that could otherwise contribute to the growth and development of our communities is far worse," he said.

The PS said failure to prioritize parental education and support in this area is a disservice to communities and a missed opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children in the country.
