Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have recovered a consignment of uncustomed powdered milk worth over Sh75 million.

The milk powder, which was packed in 1,511-25 kgs bags was recovered on Tuesday afternoon during a raid at a godown  in Umoja III’s Mowlem area, Nairobi.

The operation was conducted by detectives from the Economic and Commercial Crimes Unit and KRA officers following a tip via the #FichuakwaDCI hotline.

The milk powder had been previously declared unfit for human consumption at the Port of Mombasa by officials from the Kenya Bureau of Standards.

The government lost over Sh32 million in unpaid taxes of the illegal shipment.

It is suspected the consignment was sneaked from a Mombasa-based godown and secretly hauled to Nairobi for repackaging and selling.

Labels indicating the products' expiry dates had been removed.

A manhunt is underway to arrest those behind the scheme.

DCI has commended individuals who tipped them off and urged the public to do the same in case of suspicious activities.

"This, the Directorate said, is "for our collective safety and security."
