Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome on Monday led a top security delegation to Mutuati Sub-County, Meru County days after gunmen raided the area and killed five villagers.
Among those killed in the June 12 incident were three National Police Reservists (NPR) who were helping in pursuing the gunmen who had earlier on stolen tens of animals from villages in the area.
Koome led the security team and toured Bulo police camp to assess and address security situation in the area currently experiencing an increase in incidents of cattle rustling.
“We are determined to address this menace and get those behind it. We assure you of security here and all over,” he said.
The IG who met with the Meru County security team, and local leaders discussed a range of issues including ways to enhance security in the area, particularly in the cattle rustling torn areas, and enhance police operational preparedness and effectiveness towards service delivery.
Koome assured the residents of the commitment of police to providing high level of security and safety to all Kenyans.
The IG was accompanied by his deputy in charge of the Kenya Police Service Douglas Kanja, the commandant of the paramilitary General Service Unit Eliud Lagat, and other senior officers from Meru and Isiolo.
His visit came after President William Ruto told locals that Koome will tour there to address their security concerns.
The attack happened when gunmen raided the village and stole more than 100 animals.
The gang also stole G3 rifles belonging to the NPR officers after the attack.
The NPR was ambushed as they pursued the gang towards Isiolo after the stealing.
