National Assembly Majority leader Kimani Ichung'wah has said the government will not allow the opposition to use Article 37 of the Constitution to overturn the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Ichung'wah said the Azimio Coalition needs to honour the democracy exercised in the August 2022 general elections.

"You cannot use protests, demonstrations, picketing, that are enshrined in our Constitution to topple or stage a coup in the Republic of Kenya. We shall not allow you," he said.

The Kikuyu MP added that Kenyans were going to defend their democracy.

The Azimio brigade has been holding protests aimed at getting President William Ruto to lower the cost of living and repeal the Finance Act 2023.

The Act was suspended by the High Court and the decision was upheld on July 10, pending further directions.

"There is no moving on until Ruto comes out and openly repeals the Finance Act, 2023 and issue other measures to lower the cost of living," Azimio leader Raila Odinga said on Wednesday.

While announcing the resumption of the demonstrations next week, Raila on Thursday said they were not going to relent.

"We will have countrywide protests next week on Wednesday whether the government likes it or not," he said.

The Opposition is also carrying out a signature collection exercise seeking to oust the President.

They are seeking 15 million signatures.

The signature collection process is however not among the legal ways in which a President can be removed from office.

The removal of a president from office is done through parliament on grounds of impeachment or incapacity.
