Normalcy was witnessed in Mombasa despite the mounting tension ahead of the planned three-day Azimio demonstrations that begin today.

A few shops remained closed with few cars being seen on the road.

The police remained alert even after police bosses in the county banned any demonstrations in the county.

Azimio leaders and civil rights groups had vowed to continue with their demonstrations which were called by opposition chief Raila Odinga.

This is despite the Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome declaring the demos illegal.

On Tuesday, the opposition politicians said they would continue with their planned demonstrations from the GPO within the town centre.

Last Wednesday, the Azimio team in Mombasa engaged police in running battles for over four hours, forcing police to lob teargas to disperse them.

About 24 youths were arrested and later released. They were arrested for participating in an illegal assembly.

The UDA party brigade in Mombasa has vowed to counter the planned demonstration.

UDA politicians are expected to address the media along Moi Avenue.
